DNA test on cow favours theft accused
Thiruvananthapuram : The result of a DNA test conducted on a cow in Kerala for resolving a dispute between two women over its ownership has gone against the litigant. The test conducted at the Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology (RGCB) at Thiruvananthapuram proved false the allegation of Geetha from Punalur in Kollam district that the cow in the possession of her neighbour T S Sashilekha was hers.
Based on the DNA test report, the Punalur Judicial First Class Magistrate has dismissed the petition and permitted Shashilekha to continue the possession of the animal. The court had ordered the test, which is believed to be the first of its kind in the state, after the Pathanapuram police failed to settle the complaint lodged by Geetha. She had alleged that Sashilekhahad stolen the cow whenshe let it in the forest area for grazing.
When the accused stoutly denied the allegation, Geetha insisted on a scientific test on the cow to find whether it matches with the mother cow, which is said to be in her possession. The police then collected the blood samples of the cow and its mother cow at a veterinary hospital and sent to the RGCB for scientific examination.
The report of the test sent to the police said that the two cows were not in the same breed. Geetha has termed the DNA test finding wrong. She said that she still believed that her neighbour had stolen the cow. However, Geetha, who has spent about Rs.80, 000 on the legal battle, has not indicated continuation of the legal battle.

ചികിത്സയിലിരിക്കേ, പേവിഷബാധ സ്ഥിരീകരിച്ച് മൃഗസംരക്ഷണവകുപ്പ് ചരിത്രനേട്ടത്തില്. മൃഗസംരക്ഷണവകുപ്പിന് കീഴില് പ്രവര്ത്തിക്കുന്ന പാലോട് ചീഫ് ഡിസീസ് ഇന്വെസ്റ്റിഗേറ്റിങ് ഓഫീസാണ് സംസ്ഥാനത്ത് ആദ്യമായി ഈ നേട്ടം കൈവരിച്ചത്.
തിരുവനന്തപുരം മെഡിക്കല് കോളേജില് ചികിത്സയിലിരുന്നയാളുടെ സെറിബ്രാസ്പൈനല് ഫ്ലൂയിഡ്(സുഷുമ്നാ നാഡിയുടെയും തലച്ചോറിന്റെയും ചുറ്റുമുള്ള ദ്രാവകം) പി.സി.ആര്. (പോളിമൈറസ് ചെയ്ന് റീ ആക്ഷന് ) എന്ന പരിശോധനക്ക് വിധേയമാക്കിയാണ് പേവിഷബാധ സ്ഥിരീകരിച്ചത്. പി.സി.ആര്. ടെസ്റ്റ് നടത്തുമ്പോള് ആര്.എന്.എ.യുടെയും ഡി.എന്.എ.യുടെയും വിവരങ്ങളാണ് ലഭിക്കുന്നത്. പരിശോധനയില് പേവിഷബാധയുണ്ടാക്കുന്ന വൈറസിന്റെ ആര്.എന്.എ. കണ്ടെത്തുകയായിരുന്നു.
ആള് മരിച്ചുകഴിഞ്ഞശേഷം മാത്രമാണ് മുന്പ് പേവിഷബാധയാണെന്ന് പരിശോധന നടത്തി സ്ഥിരീകരിച്ചിരുന്നത്. ആദ്യമായാണ് മനുഷ്യനില് പേവിഷത്തിന് പി.സി.ആര്. ടെസ്റ്റ് നടത്തി വിജയം കണ്ടിരിക്കുന്നത്.
പേവിഷബാധയ്ക്ക് ലക്ഷണങ്ങള് വച്ചാണ് ചികിത്സ നടത്തുന്നത്. മസ്തിഷ്ക സംബന്ധമായ രോഗങ്ങള് ഉണ്ടാകുമ്പോഴും പേവിഷബാധയ്ക്കു സമാനമായ ലക്ഷണങ്ങള് രോഗി കാണിക്കാറുണ്ട്. കൂടാതെ പേവിഷബാധയല്ലാതെ മറ്റു രോഗങ്ങളെന്തെങ്കിലുമാണോ എന്ന് തിരിച്ചറിയാനും കഴിഞ്ഞിരുന്നില്ല. ഇതിനെല്ലാം പരിഹാരമാണ് പുതിയ കണ്ടുപിടിത്തമെന്ന് പാലോട് ചീഫ് ഡിസീസ് ഇന്വെസ്ററിഗേറ്റിങ് ഓഫീസര് പി.എം. പ്രസാദ് 'മാതൃഭൂമി'യോട് പറഞ്ഞു. ഡോക്ടര്മാരായ ടി.ടി. ആശ, സ്വപ്ന സൂസന് എബ്രഹാം, ബി. ജൂലി എന്നിവരുടെ നേതൃത്വത്തിലാണ് പരിശോധകള് നടന്നത്. ഈ മാസം ആദ്യമാണ് തിരുവനന്തപുരം മെഡിക്കല് കോളേജില് ചികിത്സയിലിരുന്ന ആളുടെ സാമ്പിളുകള് പാലോട് ഓഫീസിലേക്ക് അയച്ചത്.
